Leading Innovation in Fisheries Monitoring
📍 From May 19 to 23, 2025, THALOS is proudly participating in the International Fisheries Observer and Monitoring Conference (IFOMC), hosted this year in Reykjavík, Iceland. This key global event brings together scientific experts, fisheries professionals, and monitoring program leaders to explore new solutions for sustainable marine resource management.
SIRCEO: Harnessing AI to Revolutionize Species Identification
During the conference, THALOS is presenting its cutting-edge project: SIRCEO (Species Identification of Retained Catches with Electronic Observation). This innovative initiative is designed to help fish species identification at sea by leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence.
🎯 The main objectives of SIRCEO are:
- To develop an AI-based tool capable of automatically identifying fish species from electronic monitoring (EM) video footage captured aboard tropical tuna purse seiners.
- To combine data collected by onboard human observers and EM systems in order to build a high-quality training dataset for machine learning models.
This hybrid approach improves the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of fisheries monitoring, reducing human workload while enhancing data reliability.
Engaging with the Future of At-Sea Monitoring
IFOMC 2025 also provides a unique opportunity to exchange with the global fisheries monitoring community around major industry challenges and innovations, including:
- AI applications in electronic monitoring,
- Data management and program standardization,
- And the future of at-sea monitoring programs.
Our team is actively contributing to these conversations, sharing insights from the field and learning from other leading experts to help shape the future of sustainable fisheries.
